VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, March 11

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Camryn Vehlow, Temecula Valley: Vehlow, a central midfielder, capped her junior season in a grand fashion with two goals and an assist as the Golden Bears knocked off San Marcos 4-1 in the CIF State Division I regional final. Vehlow gave Temecula Valley the lead when she volleyed in a corner kick during the eighth minute. Vehlow provided the assist on Kate Jacobsen’s goal in the 53rd minute and added her second goal of the match in the 75th minute to cap the scoring. Temecula Valley won its final 21 matches and finished with a 24-1-1 record.

Mia Escandon, Saint Joseph: Escandon scored the golden goal in St. Joseph’s improbable comeback victory against Hemet in the CIF SoCal Division IV championship game on Saturday, March 5. The Jesters were down 2-0 at halftime but tied it 2-2 in the second half to force overtime. In the 91st minute, Escandon found an opening and scored the game-winning goal. In addition to winning the CIF SoCal Regional championship, St. Joseph also won the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship with a 1-0 victory over Sierra Canyon on Feb. 26. The championships are the first two for the St. Joseph girls soccer program.

Brianah Alejandre, Los Altos: There was a lot of buzz about Los Altos’ super freshman shortstop entering the season, and  Alejandre is living up to it. She was 12 for 18 last week with three home runs, four doubles, two triples and 10 RBIs. Los Altos is 8-6 and one of the favorites in the Hacienda League.

Jayden Nishi, South Torrance: Nishi was the MVP of the TNT Tournament and helped lead South to the championship. The junior posted a 5-0 record in the tournament with a 0.75 ERA. She struck out 24 in 28 innings and allowed just 17 hits. South is 11-0 and ranked No. 3 in this week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 1 poll.

Jayionne Brown, Orangewood Academy: The guard/forward averaged 21 points and 13.7 rebounds against Mount Miguel, Granada Hills Charter and Bishop Montgomery to help lead the Spartans to the Division I finals of the CIF State SoCal regional playoffs for the first time since 2017. She had 29 points and 14 rebounds in a 42-30 win against Granada Hills Charter in the second round.
