Women’s College World Series: Oklahoma knocks out UCLA to advance

UCLA softball forced an elimination game on Monday afternoon, but top-seeded Oklahoma saddled up and shut out the Bruins, 15-0 in five innings to move on to the NCAA Women’s College World Series finals.

It’s the second year in a row that the Sooners have eliminated UCLA from the WCWS.

Jocelyn Alo, who leads Oklahoma (57-3) in home runs with 32, hit a grand slam to finish the top of the fifth inning with a bang, but the Sooners were strong offensively from the start.

Tiare Jennings’ three-run home run in the opening frame drove in Jayda Coleman and Alo.

Alo cracked her first home run, a three-run shot, in the second inning.

Coleman was walked in the fourth inning, then Alo got her third hit of the game with a single that scored Coleman. Oklahoma exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, with Alo’s grand slam as the exclamation point.

Alo, who has 32 home runs in 60 games, was 4-for-4 with two home runs, seven RBIs and three runs scores.

UCLA manufactured just two hits in the game: a double from Briana Perez and a single by Alyssa Garcia.

Earlier in the day, Maya Brady hit two home runs as UCLA (51-10) upset Oklahoma, 7-3. The Bruins were aggressive early with Delanie Wisz, the third batter up, laced a two-run home run over the left field wall in the first inning.

Oklahoma countered the offensive attack with a home run from Jayda Coleman, the Sooners’ leadoff hitter, but were kept scoreless for the next two innings.

Maya Brady hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give UCLA a 5-1 advantage. Jennings homered in the fourth to bring in two runs, but Brady hit her 17th home run of the season in the sixth inning for two more runs that secured the win and forced the if-necessary game.

UCLA battled throughout the WCWS. It took the more difficult route after losing to unseeded Texas in the opening round to drop out of the winner’s bracket. The Bruins came back to beat Northwestern and Florida to secure a spot in the semifinals.
