Status Update: Big Blue Swim School coming to Market Place in Tustin

Big Blue Swim School is coming to The Market Place in Tustin, its second lease for a swim school in Orange County.

The swim school franchise operated by L5 Swim is expected to open in early 2023. The new pool will be on the western side of the retail complex near the 5 freeway and next to Norstrom Rack and Total Wine & More.

StretchLab opening 200th studio in Surf City

Irvine-based StretchLab is opening its 200th studio on June 24 in Huntington Beach.

To celebrate the Surf City debut, StretchLab will give free demo stretches to the first 200 guests when the doors open at 7 a.m.

The concept works one-on-one with clients to help them increase mobility and flexibility.

The franchise has studios either in place or under contract across the US, Mexico, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

JWA climbs above April 2019 passenger count

Pent-up travel demand has finally pushed John Wayne Airport above its pre-pandemic numbers for April.

An airport report shows passenger traffic was up 93% in April compared with April 2021, the most current data available. The airport served 958,826 passengers compared with 495,592 in April 2021.

In April 2019, the airport reported 899,186 passengers, meaning April 2022 topped that pre-pandemic month by 6.6%.

Step back to 2020 when scant people were traveling by air, and airport traffic is up 3,688%. JWA served only 25,313 passengers in April 2020.

This year, commercial aircraft operations increased 44.7% and commuter aircraft operations increased 13.3% vs. April 2021.

Total aircraft operations decreased in April 2022 as compared with the same month in 2021.

Other airport highlights:

13,085, total aircraft operations, up 96.6%.

26,922, total aircraft operations, down 4.4%.

The top three airlines in April 2022 based on passenger count were Southwest Airlines (354,430), United Airlines (159,861) and American Airlines (156,876).

Celebration will celebrate seniors’ advocate Marilyn Ditty

A celebration of life for senior services advocate Marilyn Ditty will take place Saturday, June 18.

Ditty died at age 81 on Oct. 31, 2021.

The memorial will begin at 2 p.m. at the Florence Sylvester Senior Center at 23721 Moulton Parkway in Laguna Hills.

Contributions to the Marilyn Ditty Memorial Fund will be used for senior programs and services at Florence Sylvester Senior Center and throughout South Orange County. For more details, go to agewellseniorservices.org/MarilynDitty. Space is limited, so reservations are required.

Poker tournament is June 18

The Speech & Language Development Center will host a Charity Poker Tournament on Saturday, June 18 at the Knights of Columbus in Buena Park.

Tickets at $135 each include dinner and one drink ticket per attendee and cost and are available online at SLDC.net/events.

Doors open at 6 p.m. followed by dinner, with the tournament beginning at 7 p.m. The winner of the tournament will get a preloaded Visa gift card.

All proceeds from the event will benefit SLDC, which helps adults and children with special needs.

The deadline to apply for small business mentorship program closes June 17.

The Small Business Administration’s T.H.R.I.V.E. Emerging Leaders Reimagined is a free program that provides CEOs and small business executives with practical skills, coaching and training that participants can immediately implement in their company.

—Annual revenues of at least $250,000

—Been in business for at least three years—Have at least one employee, other than self—Can commit to completing the full program which includes training, submitting assignments, participating during sessions, and reaching out for help

Seeking nominations for caregivers

Alzheimer’s Orange County seeks nominations for outstanding dementia caregivers.

AlzOC needs the public’s help to nominate caregivers paid and unpaid who live in Orange County and care for frail seniors. The nonprofit is looking for people who have “extraordinary compassion, something that distinguishes them and inspires others.”

The 16th annual Visionary Women Caregivers Awards event will be held online on Friday, Sept. 23. Nominate a caregiver at alzoc.org/vwluncheon.

John R. Keller is the new chief operating officer for Aliso Viejo-based IHI Power Services Corp., an owner and operator of power plants across the U.S. The company said he will eventually assume the position of CEO as Steve Gross, acting president and chief executive officer, retires and transition out of the company in the fall. Keller previously has held executive roles at organizations including Brightmark, InventivEnergy, North American Energy Alliance.

Sarah O’Rourke is the new chief program officer at Santa Ana-based MOMS Orange County, a nonprofit dedicated to newborn and pregnancy health. She most recently served as the program manager at First 5 Orange County. As chief program officer at MOMS OC, O’Rourke will oversee programs including health education and home visiting.

Gregory C. Scott, president and CEO of Community Action Partnership of Orange County, was named to the Clearinghouse Community Development Financial Institution’s board. Clearinghouse CDFI addresses the unmet credit needs. Clearinghouse CDFI has funded $2.1 billion in total loans for more than 2,546 community projects over the past 25 years.

Fundraiser updated

Orange County United Way raised nearly $500,000 at its 19th annual Women’s Philanthropy Fund Breakfast on May 19.

The money raised will support initiatives targeting poverty and housing instability in underserved neighborhoods in the county.

Yorba Linda resident Juliet O. Macaulay, 54, has been appointed to serve as a judge in the Orange County Superior Court. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Salvador Sarmiento. Macaulay has served as chief administrative law judge and deputy director for the state of California, Department of Social Services, State Hearings Division since 2020, where she worked as presiding administrative law judge from 2016 to 2020. Macaulay has also held several roles at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Board of Parole Hearings. She is a Democrat.

Nominate a Top Workplace

The 15th annual Top Workplaces program launched nominations Sunday, May 29 for Orange County companies and organizations.

Last year, the program invited 3,077 companies to take the survey to determine who would make the list of Top Workplaces. In all, 207 companies or organizations took part and a record-setting 155 winners were honored.

Here’s a look at who and how you can nominate Orange County companies and organizations …

Any organization with 35 or more employees in Orange County is eligible to participate. They can be public, private, non-profit and government.

—Workplaces are evaluated by their employees using a short 24-question survey.
