Santa Margarita girls soccer coach Eddie Huerta, who guided the Eagles to three playoff appearances in as many seasons and a Trinity League title, has “regretfully” resigned, he said Thursday.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I regretfully resign,” he said in a statement. “I want to thank Santa Margarita Catholic, the players, the parents and all the staff that made my time there memorable.”

Huerta compiled a 39-10-7 record, including a co-league title in 2019-20 and two second-place finishes in the Trinity. The Eagles lost in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs in each of his three seasons.

Huerta’s tenure at Santa Margarita included 24 seasons as the assistant under coach Chuck Morales.

Morales guided the Eagles to 19 league titles, seven section crowns and two Southern California regional championships.

Huerta said he hopes to continue coaching.

“I would love the opportunity to coach at another high school program,” he said.
