San Clemente baseball tops Trabuco Hills with walk-off victory

SAN CLEMENTE >> The San Clemente baseball team beat Sea View League favorite Trabuco Hills in walk-off fashion Friday in a league game at San Clemente High.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Chase Brunson drew a walk and Pierce Brown singled to put a runner in scoring position.

On the ensuing at-bat, Rhyn Chambers hit a walk-off single to center field to score Brunson and give the Tritons a 3-2 win.

Trabuco Hills (13-3, 4-1) had an 11-game winning streak entering Friday and had won six consecutive league games dating back to last season.

“Trabuco is the favorite. We knew somebody was going to get them, they aren’t going to go undefeated,” San Clemente Dave Gellatly said. “Thankfully it was us today, because they are going to win a lot of baseball games. We played well today, stayed within ourselves and stuck with the game plan.”

Pitcher Kaden Giles was outstanding on the mound for San Clemente (9-7, 3-1). The senior threw a complete game, surrendered two runs on just six hits and struck out a career-high 13 batters.

He has yet to allow more than two runs in a game this season.

“He’s our guy and he gives us a chance to win every single game he pitches,” Gellatly said of Giles. “He’s one of the best in the county.”

San Clemente struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Much like the final inning, with two outs in the frame Brunson drew a walk and Brown hit a single. Brunson advanced to third base on a wild pitch and Chambers hit a run-scoring single for the first run of the game.

Nolan Reid drove in a run on the next at-bat to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead.

Trabuco Hills answered with a leadoff home run by Bobby Gray in the top of the fourth inning.

Garrett Strenger hit a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Perez.

Tyler Byrns was very good in relief for the Mustangs. The senior pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed just three hits and one run with six strikeouts.

Prior to the final inning, he had allowed just two baserunners.

San Clemente is a half-game behind Trabuco Hills atop the Sea View League standings. The two teams will play a three-game series on April 20-22.

“This puts us in a little better position to finish in the top two in league and make a run at the playoffs,” Gellatly said. “Once we clinch that, maybe we have a chance to look at the league championship, but that’s a long way away.”

Trabuco Hills plays a nonleague road game Saturday against Laguna Beach.

San Clemente plays Marina in the first round of the Ryan Lemmon Tournament on Saturday at the Great Park in Irvine.
