Report: Angels pick up infielder Jonathan Villar

HOUSTON — The Angels, desperate for infield help, reportedly signed veteran Jonathan Villar, although the club has not confirmed the deal.

Villar, 31, was with the Chicago Cubs, who released him after he hit .222 with a .598 OPS.

The Angels have struggled to get production out of second base, shortstop and third base since David Fletcher and Anthony Rendon have been injured. Rendon is out for the season, but Fletcher is expected back in a couple of weeks.

The Angels have been using a combination of Tyler Wade, Luis Rengifo and Matt Duffy at second and third. Duffy is also now on the injured list, prompting the Angels to try first baseman David MacKinnon at the position.

Villar played 29 games at second and 15 at third with the Cubs this season.
