Marlins’ Garrett Cooper named to All-Star Game as injury replacement

The Miami Marlins will have a strong presence at this year’s All-Star game in Los Angeles. Garrett Cooper will join second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and pitcher Sandy Alcántara on the National League roster.

Cooper was named a replacement by Major League Baseball as a designated hitter Tuesday, taking the place of Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, who is out due to an injury. He was the next NL designated hitter in line according to the player ballot.

This is Cooper’s first All-Star selection and it comes in his fifth season with the organization.

Cooper has been one of the Marlins’ best offensive players this season hitting .299/.367/.460 with seven homers and 40 RBIs. His batting average is the highest on the team of among players with at least 100 at-bats.

With three selections to this year’s Midsummer Classic, Miami now has three or more All-Stars for the first since 2016 when Marcell Ozuna, Jose Fernandez, A.J. Ramos and Fernando Rodney all made it.

This year’s All-Star game will take place at Dodger Stadium net Tuesday at 8 p.m.
