Man throws explosive device into Anaheim Hills apartment, injuring woman

A woman was injured after a man apparently threw an explosive device into her Anaheim Hills apartment on Tuesday, officials announced on Friday, July 8.

The woman was in her kitchen upstairs around 5:45 a.m. when she heard a noise downstairs near the front door. Initially, she thought her cats knocked something over, Anaheim police said in a news release.

While walking downstairs, she recognized it was an explosive device with a burning fuse, Anaheim Police Sgt. Shane Carringer said. The woman picked it up to try and extinguish the fuse, but the device exploded in her hands.

She ran upstairs for help and was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with major injuries to her hands and feet, Carringer said.

The fuse of an explosive device burns internally, as well, making it hard to know when the device will actually explode. “We advise anyone who sees a device like that to immediately run away from it and call for help,” he said.

The apartment is in a gated Anaheim Hills apartment complex at the 8000 block of East Far Canyon Way.

A neighbor’s Ring camera footage caught the suspect, who police said is a man, walking towards the victim’s apartment wearing a backpack, dark gray hoodie, black jeans and black tennis shoes.

Glass from the front window of the apartment can be heard breaking and, as the suspect walks away, a loud explosion with smoke can be heard and seen on the footage. He was last seen heading southbound on Horizon View Drive from Far Canyon Way near the entrance/exit gate of the complex.

The type of device used – whether homemade or otherwise, was not immediately clear; nor was a possible motive. The investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the incident or can identify the suspect to contact Detective Cavaness at 714-765-1557 or ccavaness@anaheim.net.
