Esperanza softball upsets No. 1 Canyon to take lead in Crestview League

Esperanza’s softball team stayed hot Thursday by defeating the No. 1-ranked team in Orange County.

UC Riverside-bound Brooke Perez fired a six-hitter and center fielder Taylor Shumaker had three hits as the visiting Aztecs beat host Canyon 2-0 to take sole possession of first place in the Crestview League.

Esperanza (15-9, 3-0) and Perez opened their week Tuesday with a 3-0 victory against preseason No. 1 Villa Park. On Thursday, the Aztecs cooled off Michelle Carew Classic champion Canyon (19-4, 1-1) and ace Kylee Magee by scoring once in the fifth and once in the sixth inning.

Perez struck out six and walked one to outduel Magee, who allowed seven hits and struck out 10. The Arizona State-bound Magee walked three.

Sharyn Duncan and Mia Sanchez drove runs for Esperanza, which finished 3-0 in the first round of league.

Shumaker had two doubles and a triple and scored a run.
