El Modena baseball wins Ryan Lemmon tournament with victory over Woodbridge

IRVINE >> The El Modena baseball team completed a dominant run through the Ryan Lemmon Invitational tournament with a 7-1 win over Woodbridge in the championship game Wednesday at the Great Park.

The Vanguards beat Portola, Paramount, Laguna Beach and Woodbridge in the tournament by a combined score of 23-3.

El Modena (14-7) last won the Ryan Lemmon tournament in 2018, according to coach Josh Kliner.

“It was a great week for our club, really coming together and tonight was actually probably the most complete game we have played the entire year,” Kliner said. “Up and down through the lineup today, guys contributed, got their jobs done and it’s a good way to cap off the tournament.”

El Modena also got an excellent performance out of starting pitcher Nick Santivanez. The sophomore pitched a complete game, allowed just four hits, one run and struck out eight.

“A sophomore being in that situation under the lights in a championship game, you couldn’t ask for more,” Kliner said. “He came out and set the tone early and just rolled with it.”

A contributing factor in El Modena’s success were six errors made by Woodbridge (14-6). Three runs were unearned and the Vanguards got timely hits to score runs after those errors.

With the score tied at 1-1, El Modena scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. Cameron Langseth scored in the second inning off a throwing error from the Woodbridge pitcher to home plate on a ground ball. On the ensuing at-bat, Bobby Tobias executed a suicide squeeze bunt to score Sam Astor to give El Modena a 3-1 lead.

In the third inning, tournament MVP Spencer Jacobs hit a double over the center fielder’s head to lead off the inning. Nick Aufdemberg singled to score Jacobs and extend the lead to three runs.

Jackson Licata hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Aufdemberg later in the inning. Aufdemberg went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Langseth and Aufdemberg hit run-scoring singles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to put the game out of reach.

Nathan Perry was named player of the game for Woodbridge after going 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.

Woodbridge had wins over San Juan Hills, Marina and Bountiful of Utah in the tournament to reach the championship game.

Woodbridge begins a two-game Pacific Coast League series against Northwood on Tuesday, April 12.

El Modena will play a two-game North Hills League series against Brea Olinda beginning Thursday, April 14. The Vanguards have already beaten Brea Olinda twice this season.
