Beckman boys lacrosse shows its strength in victory over Aliso Niguel

TUSTIN >> The Beckman boys lacrosse team solidified its spot as the top Orange County team in CIF-SS Division 2 by beating Aliso Niguel 16-9 Saturday at Beckman High.

The two teams are the highest ranked county teams in the latest CIF-SS Division 2 poll with Aliso Niguel ranked No. 2 and Beckman ranked No. 4. Both teams are atop their respective league standings and entered Saturday with just one loss.

“We felt disrespected getting pushed down to Division 2, we wanted to stay in Division 1,” Beckman coach Richard Morrison said. “All year we told the players we have something to prove and I think we did that today. We’ve had this game circled on our calendar for quite some time and it was good to play at the caliber we know we could.”

Goalie Ryan Rosselli was instrumental in the early success Saturday for the Patriots (14-1). The Whittier College signee had a career-high 21 saves, beating his previous high of 18 he had last season against Edison.

“Ryan’s been the focal point of our defense for a couple of years now,” Morrison said. “He was just seeing the ball today and our defense was doing a good job contesting shots.”

The Beckman offense gave Rosselli plenty of support and an early lead. The Patriots moved the ball well all game and all 16 of their goals were either assisted or came on a fast break.

Max Texter led the Beckman offense with four goals and four assists. Whittier College signee Tyler Hilmar also had four goals and added two assists.

“Those two have been leading the charge all four years and this year they’ve been amazing,” Morrison said. “Any time we get the ball moving and get more guys involved, that’s when the offense runs the best.”

Beckman got off to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and never led by less than four goals after the first nine minutes of the game. Hilmar scored the first two goals of the game and Texter scored the next two during a 5-0 run.

Aidan Geffeney and Jack Dobbins each had four points and Jake Galentine had three goals.

Tommy Smith led Aliso Niguel (12-2) with four goals. The Wolverines’ top scorer this season, Mikey Laderer, was playing with a foot injury and had two goals.

Nathan Vandermerwe won 19 of 28 faceoffs for the Wolverines and had a game-high 10 ground balls.

Beckman has won 11 consecutive games and will play Irvine Wednesday. The Patriots beat Irvine in a previous game 17-0.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Aliso Niguel. The Wolverines will play Dana Hills Wednesday and if they win they will clinch their third consecutive Sea View League championship.

Aliso Niguel has beaten Dana Hills twice already this season by a combined score of 36-7.
