South Korean and American veterans and active duty service members gathered Wednesday, July 27, to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.

In evidence the alliance that fought the war remains strong between the two countries today, the event at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos was hosted by the Association of the Republic of Korea Army U.S. West Chapter in partnership with the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Association of the US Army, said Man K “Martin” Choi, president of the Korean Army association.

From 1951 to 1953, the Los Alamitos-based 40th Infantry Division deployed to South Korea, losing 350 soldiers in fighting and suffering another 1,500 casualties – sacrifice Choi said the armistice commemoration pays tribute to.“Without the enforcement from the United State Army,” Choi said his homeland would have struggled to fend off the advancement of the North Koreans and communism.

Choi, who was a captain in the Korean Army before immigrating to the United States in 1999, pointed out even today, tens of thousands of US troops remain stationed in the country to help maintain security in the region.

Several youth were included in Wednesday’s event to preserve the memory of the sacrifices made for freedom, he added. There were also cultural dances, guest speakers and a big group photo.

This was the third year the armistice event was held, Choi said next year’s 70th anniversary will be even bigger.
