5 outrageous foods coming to the 2022 OC Fair

Flamin’ Hot Cheetos will burn their way into people’s hearts at this year’s OC Fair, opening Friday, July 15 in Costa Mesa.

The crunchy snack has been pulverized and used to spice up fair foods for a few years now, and the trend is continuing in 2022 as food concessioners strive to come up with extreme, attention-grabbing creations.

But another trend is emerging: sweet and savory chicken sandwiches that outdo Popeyes and Chick-fil-A with unexpected yet familiar ingredients.

Here are five outrageous items that are new to the OC Fair this year.

Kool-Aid Fried Chicken Sandwich: Charlie Boghosian is the owner of Chicken Charlie’s, so he’s already known for preparing chicken in a variety of ways as well as deep-frying a lot of unexpected things, like Oreos. This year he decided to take on Nashville-style chicken sandwiches. His version features a deep-fried chicken breast dipped in syrup made from cherry-flavored Kool-Aid drink mix. Boghosian’s staff compared the flavor the sandwich to orange chicken. It’s served on a bun on a pile of pickle chips and topped with a whole pickle for good measure.

Get it: Two Chicken Charlie’s locations, at Family Fair Way and at the Main Mall.

Cap’n Crunch Chicken Sandwich: Biggy’s is featuring three chicken sandwiches this year. Owner Dominic Palmieri is putting breakfast cereal to creative use in this one. It uses the original golden Cap’n Crunch flavor as well as multi-colored Crunch Berries, complemented by raspberry sauce. The other two sandwiches are Nashville Hot Chicken, a spicy chicken breast topped with coleslaw, and a Flamin’ Hot Cheetos chicken sandwich.

Get it: Biggy’s, at Fair Square.

Cap’n Crunch Funnel Cake: Like the chicken sandwich, Palmieri tops this dessert with Cap’n Crunch cereal as well as whipped cream and raspberry sauce. “We do a little raspberry to give a little acid to it,” he said.

Get it: Dutchmen’s Funnel Cakes, in Kidland.

Hot Cheeto Float: Palmieri created a way to drink Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, mixing the fiery essence into a lemon-lime soda. The beverage doesn’t include ice cream, but is has a whipped cream topping with some whole Cheetos stuck in it.

Get it: Biggy’s, at Fair Square.

Flame Eater: Ten Pound Buns offers an alternative to deep-fried fair food with cheesy, buttery garlic bread made with giant slices of sourdough. This year, it’s offering Flamin’ Hot Cheetos as an extra topping.

Get it: Ten Pound Buns, Main Mall.
