Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to vote processing.

Eryn Burke, Yucaipa: Burke was a standout in dual meets against Rancho Cucamonga and Vista Murrieta. She set personal bests in the 100 meters (12.31 seconds) and 200 meters (25.09) and also ran a leg on the winning 4×100 relay team (48.22) against Rancho Cucamonga. Earlier in the week, she won the 100 meters and 400 meters (season-best 57.55) and was part of the winning 400 relay against Vista Murrieta. Burke’s times in the 100, 200 and 400 meters rank in the top six in the CIF Southern Section this season.

Kaylee Byon, Rosary: The All-County guard averaged 23.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.7 steals to lead the Royals to a 2-1 record last week against Division 1 opponents Aliso Niguel, Sierra Canyon and Etiwanda. She had a career-high 34 points, five assists and five rebounds in a 58-55 victory against Sierra Canyon.

Emi Sverduk, Wilson: Sverduk won the Edison Invitational with a 1-under par 69, besting a 50-player field. Her bogey-free round included one birdie. She also tied a school record with a 5-under par 33 on the front nine at Recreation Park to win individual medal honors in the Bruins’ Moore League win over Millikan. She completed her week with a 2-under par 36 in a league win over Lakewood. had nine birdies and just one bogey over 36 holes for the week, going 8-under par.

Cherrie Cox, West Torrance: Cox scored a hat trick and had an assist in a 7-0 win over El Segundo, and she scored a stoppage time goal in a 1-1 draw with Torrance that kept the Warriors tied for first place in the Pioneer League. Cox entered this week with 12 goals.

Layla Cates, Village Christian: No local athlete last week was more valuable to their team than Cates. She scored a career-high seven goals and had one assist, and Village Christian needed all of it in a 12-11 win over visiting Vista Murrieta, the No. 1-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 3. Cates has a team-high 23 goals this season. Teammate Delaney Konjoyan has 22 goals.

Kassandra Gewecke, Temple City: In one of the big softball games in the Rio Hondo League last week, Gewecke tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in a win over La Canada in a matchup of contenders for the league title. The Rams defeated La Canada with a run-scoring triple by Samantha Womack, who drove in Deena Reyes, in the bottom of the seventh.
