UCLA women’s basketball routs Oregon behind balanced attack

The last time the UCLA women’s basketball team played Oregon, the Bruins needed all of Michaela Onyenwere’s career-high 33 points and Charisma Osborne’s 22 for a narrow two-point win. The two players combined for 55 of the team’s 73 points that Sunday afternoon in Eugene.

Friday night’s matchup at Pauley Pavilion was nowhere near as challenging as eighth-ranked UCLA used a near-perfect first quarter to anchor a wire-to-wire 83-56 victory over the 13th-ranked Ducks and complete its first regular-season sweep of Oregon in five years.

UCLA coach Cori Close was pleased with the variety of scoring.

“The first time, I was thrilled we won, but 55 of our points came from two people,” Close said. “This time around was so much more balanced and I think a lot of our players have come into their own about what it looks like for them to have winning plays.”

Five players scored in double figures for the Bruins, who have won three straight and eight of their last nine. Onyenwere led UCLA with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Lauryn Miller added 16 points, Natalie Chou scored 14, Osborne had 13 (with six rebounds), and Chantel Horvat pitched in 10 points.

“It was a diverse group of people scoring the ball tonight, which I’m sure made it hard for (Oregon) to defend us,” Miller said of the balanced scoring.

UCLA (13-3 overall, 11-3 Pac-12) jumped out to an 18-8 lead, which grew to 23-11 before the Bruins closed out the opening quarter with a 28-11 lead. The rout was already on.

It wasn’t just about the deficit, but the way UCLA created it, making six 3-pointers (on 11 attempts), shooting 56.3% from the field in the frame, and notching an assist on all nine field goals. Other than the four turnovers, it was a near-perfect quarter of basketball.

“We were the aggressors,” Close said. “Everything started on the defensive end … we hit early 3s, they got mixed up in their matchups and that really helped us to find the open 3 and it got us going.”

The lead ballooned to 42-22 with 3:20 left in the second quarter, and by that point, the Bruins were 8 for 15 from beyond the arc. Later in the third quarter, the Bruins led 52-26.

UCLA finished the game 10 for 22 from 3-point range – their second-highest total for 3-point baskets this season – and converted on 19 of 25 attempts from the free-throw line. The offensive numbers stand out in the box score just as much as the defensive ones. The Bruins held Oregon (12-6, 9-6) to just 35.7% shooting and outrebounded the Ducks 47-25, including an 18-9 offensive rebound advantage. Lindsey Corsaro had seven boards as the Bruins had five players with at least five rebounds.

UCLA also had 21 points off turnovers compared to just six for Oregon, which suffered its biggest regular-season loss since a 27-point defeat to Stanford in 2016.

“We knew we had to be tougher rebounding,” Horvat said. “We focused and prepared for that, and I think we did a good job of that tonight.”

The win makes UCLA 4-2 against Top 25 opponents this season, a nice résumé builder heading into March. Miller said she felt like Friday night’s win was a statement game.

“I think it was (a statement game) tonight,” Miller said. “Coach Cori (Close) has been telling us to treat these last games like dress rehearsal, getting ready for March.”

The Bruins sit at third place in the Pac-12 behind No. 6 Stanford (16-2 in conference) and Arizona (13-2) with two games left to play before the Pac-12 Tournament begins March 3 in Las Vegas.

The Bruins next host Oregon State (7-6, 5-6) on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ESPN2).
