Sunset Conference teams form league for girls sand volleyball

The Sunset Conference has created a schedule for six-player girls sand volleyball teams.

The schools with teams in the league are Corona del Mar, Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Los Alamitos, Marina and Newport Harbor.

The California Department of Public Health guidelines allow interscholastic and youth volleyball to be played indoors only when a county is in the yellow tier of its color-coded tier system geared toward COVID-19 infection rates. Orange County is currently in the purple tier.

But outdoors volleyball, which is in the red tier, is allowed when a county reaches an adjusted case rate below 14, which happened last week in Orange County.

The first game is Tuesday, Edison vs. Newport Harbor at Grant Street in Newport Beach. Other locations are courts at Newland Street in Huntington Beach, Main Street in Laguna Beach, and at Seal Beach.

The wearing of masks and physical distancing will be in place, according to Newport Harbor assistant volleyball coach Andrew Mabry.
