Record high temperatures were recorded Sunday, April 18, at Los Angeles International Airport and Newport Beach along with extremely low relative humidity levels and moderate Santa Ana wind gusts throughout Southern California, the National Weather Service said.

LAX felt a high temperature of 87 degrees — four degrees higher than the 2013 record for that day — while Newport Beach broke its 2016 record of 76 degrees, topping out at 83 degrees, said Bruno Rodriguez, meteorologist with NWS San Diego. Anaheim also tied its record high at 90 degrees on Sunday, Rodriguez said.

Many parts of Southern California experienced extremely low relative humidity levels, including a low of 2 percent in Burbank, according to David Gomberg, meteorologist with NWS Los Angeles. LAX saw a relative humidity level of  5 percent that was influenced by offshore winds, Gomberg said.

It was quite a hot day across many areas in SoCal, with 4 of our climate sites breaking or tying records! LAX, Camarillo, and our office in Oxnard all broke records and Santa Barbara Airport tied theirs. Check out the graphic for the details! #CAwx #LAheat #isthissummer pic.twitter.com/b1cFnD19ld

Throughout Southern California, Santa Ana winds gusted as high as 56 mph at Keen Ridge in Riverside County, 46 mph in Chino Hills and 39 mph in Santiago Canyon, according to NWS data. In Los Angeles County, coastal and valley areas had gusts between 30 to 40 mph, while higher elevation areas felt gusts on average between 50 and 60 mph, with one mountain point reaching as high as 76 mph, Gomberg said.

By the late afternoon, the wind event had begun winding down, Gomberg said. He and Rodriguez said that Monday, April 19, is expected to be a bit “breezy.”

Warmer than average temperatures and low relative humidity are also expected to continue on Monday, according to NWS San Diego.

The conditions over the weekend prompted warnings of elevated wildfire conditions expected to continue into Monday.
