South Coast Repertory will stage its first in-person performances in 16 months this summer when it puts on two outdoor productions at Mission San Juan Capistrano, the theater announced Thursday, March 18.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning regional theater company will present “American Mariachi” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” at the mission in a new series called Outside SCR. The two shows will be performed six times each between July 15 and Aug. 1 on a new stage that will be constructed at the mission.
“We’re overjoyed about Outside SCR and our new partnership with Mission San Juan Capistrano, which enables us to expand our reach in Orange County,” SCR Artistic Director David Ivers said in a statement.
Ivers said the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced South Coast Repertory to close its doors in March 2020, has also “presented opportunities for creative growth” and led to the announcement of a spring/summer season that is “brimming with innovation.”
Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, executive director of Mission San Juan Capistrano, said the partnership between the 245-year-old mission and the 64-year-old theater will enable the community to support both historic preservation and live performance at the same time.
“Two incredibly important Orange County institutions are coming together in a pandemic to serve not only their own constituencies, but new ones as well — and it marks an exciting moment in O.C. history,” she said in a statement.
Before welcoming patrons outdoors, South Coast Repertory will continue to present streaming productions under the name SCRemote. A Theatre for Young Audiences staging of “Red Riding Hood” will be available to stream from mid- to late April.
The theater will also stream its acclaimed Pacific Playwrights Festival, with readings of new plays “Covenant” by York Walker (April 26-May 2), “Coleman ‘72” by Charlie Oh (May 10-16), “Park-e Laleh” by Shayan Lotfi (May 24-30), “Clean” by Christine Quintana (May 31-June 6) and “Harold & Lillian,” a musical with book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis (June 21-27).
“American Mariachi,” written by José Cruz González and directed by Christopher Acebo, will open at the mission July 15, with additional performances July 17, 23, 25, 29 and 31. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” will open July 16 and continue July 18, 22, 24, 30 and Aug. 1. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets, $19-$35, will go on sale Monday, March 22, and special pricing will be available for ticket-buyers 25 and younger. To purchase tickets, go to scr.org or call 714-708-5555.
