Servite athletic director answers mystery about Trinity League football scheduling

Servite High’s football team doesn’t shy away from challenges but when it comes to recent Trinity League scheduling, the Friars have faced an extra obstacle.

This spring, and in 2019, Servite has played juggernauts St. John Bosco and Mater Dei back-to-back.

While the Friars showed improvement this spring against the powerhouse programs — losing 38-28 to St. John Bosco and 24-17 to Mater Dei — they haven’t defeated either since 2011.

The league schedule for Servite has been discussed on the Trinity League Football Podcast and was recently addressed by Friars athletic director Alan Clinton, who explained how the order of games is now determined in football.

“It’s a lottery thing,” Clinton said before Servite played Mater Dei on April 3. “It changes every two years. Next year, you’ll have a new schedule. You pull it out of the hat. … which is supposed to break up things like this but for some reason, we have two magnets stuck together, so every time we pull, they come back to back.”

Clinton said the random draw will determine the order of league games for the next two seasons.

Servite football coach Troy Thomas hasn’t seemed too worried about playing St. John Bosco and Mater Dei back-to-back. even after last season. In 2019, Servite lost to St. John Bosco 27-26 but fell to Mater Dei the following week 56-11.

“That’s the Trinity League,” Thomas said of the challenge. “That’s why we love it.”
