Search underway for missing diver near Laguna Beach

A search continued Sunday, Feb. 14, for a 35-year-old diver missing in the ocean near Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The male diver was first reported missing Saturday, Feb. 13, at 9:45 p.m., near the park and Laguna Beach. The diver was last seen wearing a camouflage wet suit, according to the Coast Guard.

The missing man’s dive partner contacted the Laguna Beach Fire Department, which relayed the call to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot response boat medium crew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach as well as an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Point Mugu. The Coast Guard cutter Blackfin was also sent to the scene, the Coast Guard reported.

As of Sunday afternoon, the helicopter and the cutter were continuing the search, according to Aidan Cooney, spokesman for the Coast Guard.

California State Parks, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Laguna Beach Lifeguards agency assisted in the search.
