Los Alamitos High’s boys water polo team opened its abbreviated season Tuesday, March 2 with a victory that will be remembered for a long time.
Caden Chen redirected a nearly full-court pass from goalie Otto Nash for a goal at the buzzer as the Griffins beat host Palos Verdes 13-12 in a pairing of recent playoff foes.
In the 2019 playoffs, then top-seeded Palos Verdes defeated Los Alamitos 11-9 in the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Foothill in the semifinals.
Los Alamitos scored coming out of a timeout called with three seconds left.
In other nonleague matches:
Santa Margarita girls 8, Foothill 7: Honnie Vandeweghe and Camille Mras each scored three goals to lead the visiting Eagles, who outscored the Knights 4-1 in the second half en route to an 8-6 lead. Freshman goalie Sophia Bunnell played well in the second half for Santa Margarita and finished with four saves.
Santa Margarita boys 10, Foothill 8: Ben Kirshon scored four goals to lead the Eagles, who led 7-2 at halftime. Liam Harrison made 11 saves for the Knights (1-1).
In the Surf League:
Los Alamitos 13, Corona del Mar 4: The visiting Griffins held the Sea Queens to one goal in the second half en route to a season-opening victory. Shanna Davidson pace Los Alamitos’ offense with four goals.
In the Wave League:
Marina 21, Fountain Valley 5: Lana Kardos scored eight goals and Taylor Lambert added six to lead the Vikings.
