Pacifica High’s young but talented softball team grew up on Wednesday, April 21.
Freshman Annika Sogsti singled in sophomore Chloe Perreira in the bottom of the seventh to lift the host No. 6 Mariners to a 3-2 victory against visiting No. 1 Los Alamitos, spoiling the return of former Mariners coach Rob Weil.
The walk-off hit, with no outs in the seventh, capped the Mariners’ rally from a 2-0 deficit against Griffins (10-1) and Weil, a Pacifica graduate who won five CIF Southern Section championships at the school.
Los Alamitos is ranked No. 1 in the county and fourth in the nation by MaxPreps.
The Grffins’ high-powered offense scored twice in the the first inning but then went silent against freshman pitcher Brynne Nally, who scattered three hits and struck out six for Pacifica (8-2).
Long Beach State-bound Jacquelyn Bickar, Pacifica’s top senior, went 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and stolen base.
Los Alamitos played the Mariners amid a stretch of tough opponents. Last seek, the Griffins beat Torrance, Chino Hills and Gahr in consecutive days and defeated Marina in their Surf League opener on Tuesday. They play host to Huntington Beach on Thursday.
Pacifica lost to Marina last week.
