Mater Dei High’s quarterback lineage is so distinguished, it’s noteworthy whenever the Monarchs announce a new starter at the position.
Coach Bruce Rollinson did just that on Monday, March 15 as he named freshman Elijah Brown as the team’s starter for the season-opener game at JSerra on Friday, March 19.
Brown (6-2, 178) beat out junior Emmett Brown, a transfer from San Marcos, and sophomore Parker Awad for the starting position in the Trinity League game, which will kickoff the coronavirus-shortened season.
The Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, are trying to replace two-year starting quarterback Bryce Young, now the projected starter at Alabama.
Brown joins Todd Marinovich, Matt Barkley and JT Daniels as freshmen who have started at Mater Dei. Daniels now plays at Georgia while Barkley is the backup to Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills.
Mater Dei’s most decorated quarterbacks are Heisman Trophy winners Matt Leinart and John Huarte.
Brown played youth football with the Inland Empire Ducks and Orange County Buckeyes, and with Mater Dei’s 4 Vert team.
