Man suspected of stealing Cadillac arrested after pursuit, hours-long standoff in San Clemente

A stolen-vehicle suspect led Orange County sheriff’s deputies on a chase until he hit a dead end in San Clemente and then held them at bay for several hours Friday, March 5, before being taken into custody.

Deputies attempted to stop the driver of a Cadillac Escalade about 1 p.m. in Laguna Hills, said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

When the driver refused to stop, deputies chased him along the I-5 Freeway and onto Avenida Pico until it dead ends near Christianitos Road.

The suspect, in his 20s, brandished a gun in the vehicle several times after the standoff began, about 1:30 p.m., Braun said. SWAT and crisis-negotiation deputies attempted to talk with the suspect.

He stayed inside the Cadillac for about five hours and surrendered after SWAT team members used chemical agents, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

He was expected to be booked for car theft, evading peace officers and weapons charges, the department said.
