Police released a man who was arrested following the fatal stabbing of a 34-year-old man in Anaheim on Friday after video surveillance proved his innocence, but were also in contact with another person who may have had a role in the homicide, officials said Sunday, Feb. 28.
Officers responding to an anonymous tip found Adan Plasencia, 34, most recently of Anaheim, suffering from a fatal wound to his chest in the courtyard of the Clementine Hotel & Suites Friday evening, Anaheim Police Sgt. Steve Pena said. A possible witness to the killing said the victim had been stabbed by someone wearing a red sweatshirt and red bandana, but declined to provide further information about the altercation.
Police located a man at a neighboring shopping center who was wearing a red shirt and otherwise matched the description they were given. He fled when officers approached, and was later found with the aid of a helicopter on the roof of a gym.
Police took him into custody on suspicion of resisting arrest, and interviewed him to find out if he had was involved in Plasencia’s death, Pena said. The man was released after providing an alibi, which was confirmed by security video recorded in the area of the stabbing.
Investigators reviewed additional footage from that evening and identified a man matching the description provided by the witness, Pena said. That person has also been contacted by police. He was questioned Saturday, then released while police work to determine if he might be a suspect in the killing. Authorities were not searching for any other possible suspects as of Sunday evening.
