Juveniles sought after man is injured in Newport Beach assault captured on video

Newport Beach police were conducting a battery investigation involving “juvenile male suspects,” an incident recorded and posted to social media that left one man hospitalized over the weekend, officials said Monday, March 8.

The altercation  took place near Balboa Boulevard East and Main Street at about 10:11 p.m. Saturday, March 6, Newport Beach Police said in a news release. Officers responded and found a man with serious injuries who was taken to a hospital. He was listed in “stable condition,” police said.

The young males suspected of injuring the victim fled the scene before officers arrived, police said. No arrests were immediately announced in connection with the assault.

“NBPD Detectives are conducting an active investigation, and are aware of the video circulating on social media,” a police statement said.

Police did not immediately confirm if footage apparently captured near the scene of the altercation and posted to social media Monday morning, then broadcast by KTLA that evening, is the same recording involved in their investigation.

The circulating video shows what appeared to be two teenagers approaching a man with a gray beard who was on foot in a crosswalk. Another person standing off-camera can be heard encouraging the younger males to fight the man.

It’s unclear who threw the first punches in the footage as a passing car obscures the initial moments of the incident. A third young male joins the others attacking the older man, while a second adult appears to defend him.

The gray-bearded man appears to bend down when one of the people attacking kicks him in the head. He falls backwards, and the back of his head can be heard striking the concrete.

A young male involved in the fight then stands over the victim’s unmoving body immediately after he seems to lose consciousness and taunts him. That suspect was wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt with its sleeves rolled up, a black and red backpack and tan pants.

Another suspect was wearing a gray sweater, black pants, a black beanie and tennis shoes. The third young male seen in the footage wore a black hooded sweatshirt with a white stripe along at least one of its sleeves and dark-colored pants.

Police asked anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Newport Beach police detective Gamble at 949-644-3771, or mgamble@nbpd.org
