Jett Daviss scores 3 TDs as Beckman overpowers Portola

TUSTIN– Beckman senior running back Jett Daviss carried the Patriots’ offense on his back in a 27-7 win over Portola on Thursday at Tustin High.

The three-year starting running back rushed for a career-high 206 yards on 31 carries with three touchdowns on senior night. He accounted for over 70 percent of Beckman’s total offense.

“He’s always been really influential as a young man. He never missed a single workout during COVID,” Beckman coach Marcello Giuliano said. “The character he brings to the program, the leadership and example he sets is huge. And then on top of all that he is a darn good running back.

“Everyone knows he’s our guy and we are going to get him the ball. He’s going to have a great senior season.”

Beckman (1-1) opened the game with a 10-play, 66-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Daviss to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead. The drive took nearly half of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Daviss broke multiple tackles and ran for a 16-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14.

The Patriots held a 14-7 lead for 18 minutes of game time when a big defensive play reignited the team and helped them put a stamp on their victory. Zach Beshir intercepted a Portola pass and returned it into the Bulldogs’ territory. Quarterback Jeff Graham scored on a 6-yard option play to put the lead back to 14.

On the last series of the game, Keller Meyer intercepted a Portola pass and returned it to the 3-yard line. Daviss took it from there and scored to seal the victory.

Portola (1-1) had a similar offensive strategy as Beckman’s: get the ball to the star running back as much as possible. Nova Kebeli rushed for 107 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown, but never broke through for a long run.

The Beckman defensive line and linebackers executed their assignments and made sure Kebeli couldn’t get into open space. They held Portola to just 121 yards of total offense.

“It was critical that our defensive line played well and didn’t create gaps for him to run through. Nose tackle Alvin Hsu was fantastic,” Giuliano said. “Because they did their jobs, our linebackers could do theirs and that was great. It was a true team effort on defense.”

It was Beckman’s first win of the season and it was a win over the defending Pacific Coast League champions, who beat them last season. Giuliano credited the seniors on the team for helping change the mindset and approach this season.

“In last year’s game we didn’t present the right character and championship qualities we should have as a program,” Giuliano said. “It was really important for us to present ourselves the right way tonight. For us to play the game the right way and come out on top is huge for these seniors and this team.”

This season, the Pacific Coast Conference is divided into two leagues of four teams. Beckman opens Pacific Valley League play next week against University. Portola begins Pacific Hills League play against Northwood.
