Jason Hitchens has resigned as the football coach at Katella for health reasons, he confirmed Tuesday night.
This was Hitchens’ first season as the team’s coach. The Knights played their first game last week, a 37-0 win over Costa Mesa, although Hitchens was not at the game. He coached the team during the week of practice leading up to the game.
He declined to specify his health concerns.
“From a health perspective,” he said, “it’s not good to push myself going forward.”
Hitchens previously was head coach at El Modena (1998-2003), St. Margaret’s (2006-07) and Corona del Mar (2008-10). He most recently coached at Richfield High in Utah.
At Katella he replaced Fred DiPalma who retired after last season, his 12th year coaching the team. DiPalma led Katella to a CIF Southern Section championship in 2017.
Hitchens coached St. Margaret’s to a CIF-SS championship in 2006. Corona del Mar advanced to CIF-SS semifinals twice during Hitchens’ tenure there.
Katella plays at Ocean View in a nonleague game Friday.
