Jackson Smith’s powerful running propels El Dorado to victory over Canyon

ORANGE – Canyon’s football team had no answers for El Dorado’s Jackson Smith on Thursday.

The senior running back rushed for 226 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown and several broken tackles while leading El Dorado to a 26-6 victory over Canyon in a North Hills League game at El Modena High’s Fred Kelly Stadium.

The Golden Hawks’ victory sets up a showdown for the league title with Brea Olinda on Friday, April 16.

“Jackson Smith is the best athlete I’ve ever been around,” Golden Hawks wide receiver Gavin Sanders said. “Put the rock in that guy’s hands and he can run for 300, 400 yards. The guy is just a phenomenal athlete. He’s just a freak of nature.”

El Dorado (2-2 overall, 2-0 in league) got on the scoreboard first with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Blake Thomas to Sanders. The Comanches responded back with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Christian Lundsberg to Aiden Alvidarez to make it a 7-6 game following a failed conversion.

It was the only score Canyon (0-5, 0-2) would get in the game.

El Dorado was in control most of the game, but couldn’t control the penalty bug, taking 75 yards in penalties.

“We have to get better,” Golden Hawks coach Zach LaMonda said. “We shot ourselves in the foot. A lot of holding penalties and other calls that we have to fix. We put ourselves in a position with our great team. They work hard and they grind it out, but we have to get better.”

Thomas completed 14 of 20 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 62 yards on eight carries.

Lundberg was 11 of 23 passing for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ryan Gardner caught seven passes for 48 yards and Ethan Pham led Canyon with 12 tackles.

Canyon takes on Esperanza on Thursday, April 15 at Yorba Linda High. El Dorado will travel to Brea Olinda with the league championship on the line.

“We have to play our hearts out,” Smith said. “We have to be dominate on defense, pound the rock and sling the ball. We have to play some great football.”
