SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — James Bohls briefly wiped his eyes after being asked what late San Clemente High assistant football coach Joe Wood would have thought of his performance Friday at San Juan Hills High.
The senior running spoke from his soul and found the mark.
“Coach Wood would be proud of me because Coach Wood was a big part of my heart,” he said after rushing for a career-high 176 yards and three touchdowns in the Tritons’ 35-7 victory over the Stallions to open the South Coast League.
“He taught me to run 100 percent, don’t fumble the ball. That’s what I did tonight.”

The Arizona-bound Bohls scored on runs of 8, 19 and 45 yards in helping No. 6 San Clemente (3-0, 1-0) honor Wood, who died in February after a battle with the coronavirus.
He racked up 119 yards on 13 carries in the first half as the Tritons opened a 21-0 lead. He broke his 45-yard score on his 16th and final rushing attempt to cap the scoring.
“Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games,” San Clemente coach Jaime Ortiz said. “If you want an opportunity for a league championship, it starts with San Juan Hills.”
Bohls gained his yards behind offensive linemen Tanner Mehrens, Adam Edmunds, Myles Wire, Ryland Swarthout and Aidan Coulson.
San Juan Hills (2-1, 0-1) played without its top two receivers Braden Pegan and Cole Monach because of injuries and it struggled against the Tritons’ defense. Defensive end Kanious Vaughn paced the unit by recording three of San Clemente’s six sacks.
Bentley Redden and Noa Serpa also added sacks.
The BYU-committed Redden capped the Tritons’ opening possession with a 25-yard touchdown reception on a third-and-7 pass from Lachlan Van Rosmalen. The junior quarterback finished with 169 yards.
Bohls capped two of San Clemente’s next three possessions with touchdown runs of 8 and 19 yards, respectively. The latter was the Tritons’ fourth third-down conversion in five tries in the first half.
No. 11 San Juan Hills focused on running the ball in the first half. Brayden Burnes rushed for 55 yards on 16 carries but the Stallions didn’t complete a pass. Hudson Jones fired a 5-yard TD to Dashiel Ross earlier in the fourth quarter to cut San Clemente’s lead to 28-7.
Next week, San Clemente plays Tesoro while San Juan Hills takes on Mission Viejo.
