Girls basketball roundup: Santiago stays hot, edges Whittier Christian on late free throw

Point guard Andi Martinez sank a free throw with 4.4 seconds left in regulation to lift Santiago High’s girls basketball team past visiting Whittier Christian 49-48 in nonleague game on Wednesday, April 7.

Martinez, a sophomore, drove to the basket with 8 seconds remaining and drew a foul with the score tied 48-48. She gave Santiago (2-0), ranked 24th in Orange County, the lead for good by sinking the first foul shot.

Senior Briana Landeros led Santiago with 16 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Alexia Valencia and Martinez chipped in nine and seven points, respectively. Martinez also had six assists.

Santiago opened the spring season with a 53-33 victory against No. 25 Canyon.

In other nonleague games:

No. 4 Sage Hill 59, No. 13 Orange Lutheran 46: Emily Elliott had 18 points and 14 rebounds and freshman Emily Eadie added 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host Lightning (3-1). Freshman Kat Righeimer almost joined the double-double club with 12 points and nine rebounds for Sage Hill.

No. 16 Crean Lutheran 54, No. 19 El Dorado 48: Taylor Feldman scored 23 points and Emily Reed added 18 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the host Saints (3-1) past the Golden Hawks (0-1).
