Galaxy preseason recap: Three things from Saturday’s 1-0 win over New England

The Galaxy continued its preseason schedule with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution, Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Here are three things we noticed:

1. The youth is here

When was the last time the Galaxy had so many teenagers on the roster and all of them are showing they’re more than capable of gaining first-team minutes? This year, Galaxy coach Greg Vanney has a good group to choose from and they showed why Saturday night.

Due to international call-ups and injuries, Vanney inserted four teenagers (Jalen Neal, Adam Saldana, Jonathan Perez and Cameron Dunbar) into the starting lineup.

Despite their age, the quartet continued to show they1 certainly belong with the first team and will be valuable pieces throughout the season. Perez scored the only goal of the game.

2. Chicharito puts in strong shift

Chicharito Hernandez didn’t score, but he had the assist on Perez’s goal. His work rate was remarkable throughout his 60 minutes. Hernandez was dropping deep into midfield at times, pressing defenders at other moments and his runs from deep midfield to join the attack were impressive. The team also appears like they’re really grasping how Vanney wants them to play. Although it was preseason, the first 45 minutes was an impressive half for the Galaxy.

3. Bond stands strong in goal

Jonathan Bond joined the Galaxy this season after spending his career in the English Championship and Premier League.

Although there is a crowded goalkeeping room for the Galaxy, Bond will be the starter heading into the new season and he showed why in the first half of Saturday’s game.

Bond came up huge on several chances by the Revolution including blast by Gustavo Bou that forced Bond to come up with a leaping, one-handed save.

He had to be on his best because New England was credited with 24 shots and seven on goal.

Jonathan Klinsmann replaced Bond in the 60th minute

Up next: The Galaxy will face New England again, Wednesday at 7 p.m. We expect some lineup rotation, like Jorge Villafana, who went only 30 minutes Saturday. Vanney said they will push his minutes some Wednesday.
