Flavien Prat wins 6 consecutive races at Santa Anita

Flavien Prat, leading jockey during Santa Anita’s winter-spring meet, joined nine others by riding six winners on Friday’s eight-race card.

Prat, 28, came up one victory shy of Laffit Pincay Jr.’s record of seven victories in one day, accomplished March 14, 1987. Prat did tie Pincay’s record of winning six consecutive races.

The Frenchman came up a head short on 4-5 favorite Clearly Gone in the opener and then won the next six races. He would have had a chance to tie Pincay’s record, but his mount in the day’s final race, Took Charge, was scratched.

The other nine riders who’ve won six races in one day at Santa Anita: Bill Shoemaker (1962), Pincay (’73 and ’81), Steve Valdez (’73), Sandy Hawley (twice in ’76), Darrel McHargue (’78 and ’79), Patrick Valenzuela (’88), Martin Pedroza (’92), Corey Nakatani (2000) and Rafael Bejarano (’06).
