An elderly woman died Tuesday after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Santa Ana.
Preliminary investigation suggests the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle turning left onto eastbound Willits Street from southbound lanes of Sullivan Street, Santa Ana Police said in a news release. Officers were summoned at about 11:54 a.m., and found her injured in the intersection.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She was described as a woman in her 80s, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. Her identity was withheld pending the notification of relatives
The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman left without stopping to check on her, Bertagna said. Investigators contacted him a few blocks away at his residence, and he was cooperating with authorities.
It was not immediately clear whether the driver knew a person was hit. No arrests were immediately made in connection with the crash, which is being investigated as a possible hit-and-run collision, Bertagna said.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the woman’s death, police said.
Authorities asked anyone with information that might be relevant to investigators to call Santa Ana Police Cpl. W. Hadley at 714-245-8216, or the department’s Traffic Division at 714-245-8200.
