Dylan Neal, Fullerton overpower Pacifica from the start

FULLERTON – Dylan Neal threw for three touchdowns, ran for one TD and kicked a 26-yard field goal to lead Fullerton to a 31-8 season-opening victory over Pacifica on Friday at Fullerton High.

Neal began the game for Fullerton (1-0) with a successful onside kick, which he followed with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Mays on the first play of the game.

“That was so big,” Neal said. “We came out a little nervous because it was our first game coming back. Once we got control of the game, it was over from there.”

Neal threw two more touchdowns, both to Jake Romero, for 30 and 16 yards, while also running for a 25-yard score. Neal ended the first half with a 26-yard field goal.

Neal completed 12 of 13 passes for 182 yards, including the three touchdowns, and rushed for 83 yards on six carries with a score. He connected with Romero for eight catches and 100 yards and a touchdown.

“We expected that,” Fullerton coach Richard Salazar said of Neal’s impressive night. “He just needed his shot and his opportunity. I spent a full year with him and the coaches have done a great job. He’s listening and he’s making those plays. I’m glad he had a great game tonight.”

The Mariners (0-1) had a hard time driving the ball in the first half, but managed to get a score in the third quarter thanks to a 3-yard touchdown run by CJ Washington.

Washington rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries.
