Corona del Mar barely gets past rival Newport Harbor in ‘Battle of the Bay’

NEWPORT BEACH – Corona del Mar made it eight consecutive wins over rival Newport Harbor in the “Battle of the Bay” series by pulling out a 10-7 victory on Friday night at Newport Harbor High.

Sea Kings kicker Dane Voorhees drilled a 40-yard field goal with 1:11 left in the first half that proved to be the difference in the game.

Corona del Mar coach Dan O’Shea wasn’t concerned with style points, just a victory over their in-city rivals.

“We consider this ‘Battle of the Bay’ the single best high school football rivalry in the country,” O’Shea said. “Our goal is to own the city of Newport Beach and we are very fortunate tonight, against a very good Newport Harbor team, in a 10-7 game. That’s how it should be in a rivalry, you want to be in a dogfight.”

The Sea Kings turned a shanked punt into their only touchdown of the game late in the first quarter as they took over at the Sailors 30-yard line. Corona del Mar needed just two plays to score after that, a 24-yard run by Evan Sanders and then a 6-yard keeper by quarterback David Rasor to give the Sea Kings a 7-0 lead.

Newport Harbor tied the game on a 2-yard run by Justin McCoy with 8:46 left in the second quarter, after converting on a fourth-and-1 at the Corona del Mar 12. The drive spanned two quarters and a personal foul penalty by the Sea Kings helped the Sailors keep their drive alive.

Corona del Mar retook the lead for good thanks to great field position after another lackluster punt. The Sea Kings took over at the Newport Harbor 33 and Voorhees drilled a 40-yarder.

“It was a massive kick, and we got another couple opportunities. We went for a couple of fourth downs down there (in Newport territory), but we had a hard time executing because they’re a good football team,” O’Shea said.

The Sailors suffered a big blow when McCoy (54 rushing yards) suffered an injury to his right leg on the last play before halftime.

With McCoy out, Josiah Lamarque took over duties as the primary ballcarrier for Newport Harbor in the second half but was held to just 9 yards rushing.

The Sailors missed a 26-yard field goal attempt that would’ve tied the game at 10 late in the third.

The Sea Kings had an opportunity to extend their slim advantage in the fourth but had a touchdown by Ryan Zimmerman called back for holding. Voorhees attempted a 30-yard field goal that went wide left after a high snap from the left hash.

Newport Harbor fumbled on its last possession as Mason Kubichek jarred the ball loose from a Corona del Mar receiver and Tommy Griffin pounced on it to seal the win.
