Angels pitchers roughed up by A’s

THE GAME: The Angels allowed runs in each of the first four innings on the way to an 11-2 loss to the Oakland A’s on Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Jaime Barria gave up four runs in three innings, two on a towering homer by Matt Olson. The Angels are still waiting to find out if Barria will be granted a fourth option, although at this point it may be a moot point because the Angels figure to need him in the bullpen because of other injuries. Barria is probably the next pitcher up if the Angels need a starter beyond their six-man rotation. “My whole mentality is to try to help the team out, if they want to use me as a starter or in the bullpen,” Barria said through an interpreter. … Left-hander Alex Claudio gave up two runs in an inning. He had not allowed a run in either of his first two games. … Right-hander Junior Guerra was charged with four runs in 1-2/3 innings. Guerra was added to the 40-man roster this week, a sign that he will make the team as a multi-inning reliever. … Right-hander Jake Faria worked a scoreless inning. Faria, who is a candidate to make the Opening Day bullpen, has allowed two runs in eight innings this spring.

HITTING REPORT: David Fletcher had two hits, both balls he flicked into right field. …Dexter Fowler was hitless in two trips to the plate, including a sacrifice fly. Fowler had started the spring 3 for 20 before going to hit in a B game on Thursday. He hit a homer and had two other hits in that game, and told coaches that he felt he had found an adjustment with his swing. … Justin Upton was robbed of a hit by Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman, who made a diving stop to his left.

DEFENSE REPORT: First baseman Albert Pujols went to the ground to smother a ground ball up the line, then he got the ball to Barria covering the bag in time for the out. … Playing second base, Fletcher ranged into right field to grab a bouncer and he spun and threw to first. An inning later Fletcher made almost the same play, but the runner was called safe. … Center fielder Mike Trout made a diving catch. … Juan Lagares made a leaping catch at the center field fence after replacing Trout. … Third baseman Jose Rojas made a nice play on a chopper, cutting in front of shortstop Luis Rengifo and making a strong throw.
