THE GAME: The Angels beat the Mariners, 7-4, in a game that lasted seven innings before an announced crowd of 1,897 on Wednesday night at Peoria Stadium.
PITCHING REPORT: Jose Quintana did not allow a run over 3-2/3 innings, extending his scoreless innings streak to 8-2/3 over four Cactus League appearances. He allowed two hits and struck out six. The left-hander began the game by freezing Mitch Haniger on a 3-and-2 changeup, a pitch he has seldom used in the past. “I feel right now I can throw that pitch in any count,” Quintana said. “I have a really low percent changeup usage in the past. I need it to get good results on the fastballs and curveballs. I need to throw it for strikes. It’s a good time to try it.” … Ty Buttrey threw 1-1/3 scoreless innings in relief. … All the Mariners’ runs came on a grand slam by Evan White against minor league left-hander Thomas Pannone in the sixth inning. … Non-roster invitee Jacob Faria threw a scoreless seventh inning.
HITTING REPORT: Shohei Ohtani batted leadoff for the first time in spring training, and drew a walk and singled in his only two plate appearances. He stole a base and scored a run in the first inning. … Franklin Barreto hit the Angels’ only home run, his first of spring training. The second-inning solo shot gave the Angels a 4-0 lead against Mariners starter Chris Flexen. … Taylor Ward went 3 for 3 and scored twice. … Jo Adell singled in a pair of runs against Flexen. … Luis Rengifo went 2 for 3 and is batting .316 in Cactus League play. … Brandon Marsh tripled against former teammate Keynan Middleton in the seventh inning.
FIELDING REPORT: Adell, getting the start in right field, made a nice running catch going to his left, which Manager Joe Maddon took as a sign of incremental progress for the Angels’ top prospect.
UP NEXT: Angels (Andrew Heaney) vs. Milwaukee (Corbin Burnes), Thursday, 1 p.m., Tempe Diablo Stadium, Fox Sports West, 830 AM
