The last big Lakers shot was fired by the man most unlikely to shoot it.

Marc Gasol was alone in the corner when LeBron James found him with a pass. His seventh and final shot was as many attempts as he’s taken in a game this season, and the 29 minutes he played were also a season-high.

But the 36-year-old acknowledged – through his words and his play in the Tuesday night win in Minnesota – that it’s going to take a little more from everyone to get by the next few weeks without Anthony Davis.

“Whatever the injury is, you react to,” said Gasol, who scored 11 points to reach double figures for just the second time this season. “He’s going to attack it from his side and we’re going to hold it down for him.”

It was evident in James’ rebounds. Gasol’s and Markieff Morris’ 3-pointers. Defensive plays by Kyle Kuzma and Alex Caruso. Buckets at the rim by Dennis Schröder and Montrezl Harrell.

Life without Davis won’t be easy – and neither was the 112-104 victory over the last-place Timberwolves. But the Lakers showed what the path ahead looks like in the first of what is expected to be a slew of games without their 27-year-old franchise star who is expected to miss at least the next two weeks with a strained Achilles tendon.

Not surprisingly, James was the leading man, dropping 30 points with 13 rebounds and seven assists. But even without his running mate, he had plenty of help.

Scoring-wise, a lot came from Schröder whose quickfire off-the-dribble moves helped net him 24 points either on layups, teardrop jumpers or at the free-throw line. But he also delivered a two-way effort, swiping four steals from the Timberwolves and helping close the fourth quarter in which the Lakers had a 26-20 edge. The Lakers are now a league-best 12-3 in games within five points in the final five minutes.

They’re also now 5-1 without Davis this season, which Coach Frank Vogel said reflects the depth of the roster in a season when absences and injuries have been more common than usual.

“We knew it was going to be a concern with potential injury and I like what we have to go to war with,” he said. “In this stretch where we’re going to be without Anthony Davis, we’ve got to have a deep team and I’ve got a lot of guys on this roster I believe in.”

The Lakers couldn’t stay in front of No. 1 draft pick Anthony Edwards, who scored a career-high 28 points including a 3-pointer that brought the hosts to within five points when it looked like the Lakers were preparing to cruise out of Target Center. But Gasol hit that clinching corner 3-pointer off a James assist with just over a minute left – part of an encouraging trend that saw Gasol and Markieff Morris make six of the team’s 11 3-pointers.

Harrell had 17 points in support (on just seven shots), and also helped defend Karl-Anthony Towns who despite shooting 7 for 10 from the floor was held to 15 points – an encouraging sign with an upcoming schedule that includes games against elite big men like Miami’s Bam Adebayo and Utah’s Rudy Gobert. Afterward, Vogel lauded both Gasol and Harrell, who he said is never one to back down from a matchup with a bigger foe.

“I don’t really believe in that smaller stuff, man,” said Harrell, who is 6-foot-7, four inches shorter than Towns. “Because at the end of the day, if you believed in that, the elephant would be the king of the jungle. And that ain’t happening.”

Even for the Lakers, the opening minutes were especially ragged. Even though they shot nearly 77 percent in the first frame, they led by only three points thanks to 10 turnovers – four of which were coughed up by James.

But James made up ground with inside scoring, including a pair of hook shots that summoned to mind Magic Johnson. With only one 3-pointer on the evening, James made 10 of his baskets in the paint.

It was a 38-minute night for the 36-year-old, who has ramped up his workload as games have gotten tighter lately and the MVP buzz has gotten stronger. But with eight more games left until the All-Star break, likely all of them without Davis, he didn’t sound like he was preparing to give up any of that responsibility – much the opposite.

“We’re not expecting one person to try to pick up A.D.’s productivity,” he said. “Nobody is going to be able to do that, he just brings too much to the table. We all can do more. We all can collectively do more and that’s our job.”
