2nd man dies from wounds sustained in Long Beach shooting in February

A second man has died as a result of a February shootout in a Long Beach home, authorities said this week.

Byron Miller, 51, of Buena Park died in a hospital on March 21, nearly a month after he was shot in the 300 block of East 25th Street, near Long Beach Boulevard, in a shooting that left another man dead and a woman injured, police said.

Lavelle Brandon, 45, of Long Beach died at a hospital hours after the late-morning shooting on Feb. 23, police said. A 49-year-old woman was also struck by gunfire, in the lower body.

Detectives believe all three people knew one other and that a dispute outside the home led to an exchange of gunfire between two people, police said, though it wasn’t known which two fired. Two firearms were found by police.

Police said they learned a fight had occurred in a nearby city that involved people known to both Miller and Brandon. After hearing about that assault, Miller and the woman drove to the home where the shooting took place, police said, to confront one of the people involved in the fight.

No one involved in the fight was at the home, but the confrontation led to gunshots, police said. The shooting was being investigated as gang-related.
