Barricade situation resolved in South Laguna Beach neighborhood

Police asked residents in a South Laguna Beach neighborhood to stay in their homes Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 23, while officers tried to get a 31-year-old man who had barricaded himself in a family member’s home to come outside, authorities said.

Laguna Beach police were called to the home at 10:20 a.m. after their 9-1-1 dispatch received a call from an elderly woman who said she had been attacked with a blunt object by her nephew, Laguna Beach Police Lt. Cornelius Ashton said.

Ashton said the woman was taken to a nearby trauma center with significant injuries and she was undergoing treatment Tuesday afternoon.

The barricade began shortly after when Laguna Beach police officers asked the man to come out from the home with his hands up. Several police officers with drawn guns were on the scene, and efforts to negotiate with the man continued for hours. Two K9 officers were also assisting and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department helicopter also assisted from overhead.

Police asked residents between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue and between Coast Highway and Sunset to remain in their homes.

Ashton said that by 2:30 p.m., a Newport Beach Police SWAT team had arrived and negotiations continued. Around 4 p.m., police fired tear gas into the house.

Police said the suspect was in custody after the tear gas deployment. The man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.
