Irvine Frontier is the OCVarsity Student Section of the Week for Week 0

Manny Alvarez of the Student Section Report is writing for OCVarsity about the high school student sections during the football season. Each Monday morning the Orange County Student Section of the Week will be announced. At the end of the season, an OCVarsity Student Section of the Year will be chosen.

The weather forecast for Irvine on Friday night was warm with a chance of green clouds.

Someone must have known that football season is back, which means the Irvine High School’s Irvine Frontier is back with their green powder!

The Vaqueros opened the 2022 football season at home against city rival Portola, and the Frontier was ready to go. They just picked up where they left off last season.

Their social media was on point and the green powder wasn’t the only prop they had. They rocked the thunder sticks, otherwise known as balloons. The crowd was loud and crazy!

The Frontier leaders stepped up big and kept the Frontier volume at 11! It impressed the Irvine staff and I’m sure it helped the Vaqueros in their 31-10 victory over Portola.

Orange County student sections like the Santa Margarita Eagles Nest and the San Juan Hills Stampede rocked it back and forth, but the Irvine Frontier rocked it just a bit better Friday and they are the OCVarsity Student Section of the Week for Week 0!

“The Frontier’s 2022 premier face off against Portola High School showcased Irvine’s signature pride and spirit,” Frontier president Callie Shane said. “ A combination of anticipation for the new athletic season, coordination between all student groups during Friday Night Lights, and Vaquero pride led way to the Frontier’s DOMINANCE.”

Other Week 0 Finalists

Santa Margarita Eagles Nest: The Eagles Nest had a Student Section battle with the San Juan Hills Stampede. Judging by the low-scoring game the battle must have rattled both offenses, but the Eagles Nest insanity may have helped the Eagles in their 18-8 victory.

Aliso Niguel Den: Despite the tough 54-20 loss to Canyon, the Den was loud and crazy. The chants and cheers were never ending and I love their never-give-up attitude!

Servite Asylum: Road Warriors! The Asylum made it look like a home game for the Friars as they had a student section battle with the Rancho Cucamonga Rooters! Making the Friday evening drive to Rancho Cucamonga is legendary!

San Juan Hills Stampede: The Stampede battled with the Eagles Nest on Friday and put on a show that distracted both offenses.

Orange Lutheran Code Red: Code Red came ready to roll and rocked the stands in the Lancers’ thrilling 27-26 victory over Serra.

Manny’s Predictions for Week 1

Each week this season, I will make five Student Section predictions. Here are the predictions for Week 1:

More Road Warriors! I was so impressed to see a bunch of student sections on the road last Friday. Aside from the Servite Asylum, I also saw the San Clemente Loud Crowd and the Canyon Tribe on the road. Those are just two of the several student sections that traveled to away games last week. I expect a lot more to make the sacrifice of sitting in that awesome SoCal traffic this Friday evening to root, root, root for the away team.

City of Tustin showdown: Foothill and Tustin will meet Friday for city bragging rights at Tustin High. The Tustin Barn will be ready to go, as they should be, because the Foothill Dungeon is one of the best out there and they’ll look to defend their title as city champs.

Servite Asylum on the road again: After a long trip last week to Rancho Cucamonga, the Asylum will be making the drive down to Mission Viejo to battle the Diablo Inferno. If they brought a good number to the Inland Empire, expect a larger group in Diablo Country.

Canyon Tribe back on the road: I was impressed and proud to see my alma mater’s student section make the trip to Aliso Niguel on Friday. There were 30-40 Canyon students that got to see Canyon’s big victory. I expect the Tribe to make the shorter trip this week to Irvine on Friday to battle with this week’s OCVarsity Student Section champs, the Irvine Frontier.

Student section battle at Fred Kelly Stadium: Two schools from the Orange Unified School District — Villa Park and Orange — will meet at Fred Kelly Stadium on Friday. The Orange Juice Box will be ready to roll and battle with the Villa Park Black Pack, whose student section advisor has moved on to Redondo High School, so we shall see if the Black Pack still has that special magic.
