Tiller, a senior Boise State-bound transfer quarterback from Arizona, threw for 215 yards and a touchdown as the Cougars routed Servite 27-7 in the season opener for both teams.

“C.J. is the leader of our offense, and he made the plays a Division I quarterback makes,” Rancho Cucamonga coach Brian Hildebrand said. “I thought our offensive line did a good job of protecting and we ran the ball well, especially in the second half when we needed to.”

Tiller completed 15 of 29 passes and five of his completions went for at least 25 yards, and junior Jonah Dawson caught five passes for 131 yards and the touchdown.

It was not quite as smooth an offensive night for Servite, which utilized three quarterbacks: sophomores James Johnson and Leo Hannan and senior Julian Puche.

Puche, who played most of the second half, led the Friars to their lone touchdown, a 10-yard pass to Quaid Carr in the game’s final minute.

“I thought our defense did a really good job,” Hildebrand said. “We tackled really well. We were going in blind. We didn’t really have any film on them, except 7-on-7.”

The Cougars scored on the game’s opening drive, going 80 yards in eight plays, as Trey Wilson scored on a seven-yard run to make it 7-0.

On Rancho Cucamonga’s next scoring drive, Tiller was able to showcase his skills a little more.

He took a run-pass option play for 23 yards and later completed a 35-yard pass to Julian Lundy on third-and-29.

Rahim Wright, lining up in a wildcat formation, scored on an eight-yard run to make it 14-0.

The final drive of the first half provided Tiller’s first touchdown pass, completing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Dawson just inside the front right pylon and a 21-0 lead with 34.7 seconds left in the half.

Tiller threw for 155 of his yards in the first half.

The second half was a lot more of Wilson, who rushed for 72 yards and added his second touchdown run, a three-yarder in the third quarter to make it 27-0.

Cougars punter-kicker Anthony Hagan missed most of the second half after he was the victim of a roughing-the-kicker penalty in the third quarter. He appeared to injure his ankle, although he was able to walk off the field under his own power after the game.
