Galaxy adds versatile defensive midfielder Gastón Brugman

On the eve of the opening of the Secondary Transfer Window, the Galaxy announced the acquisition of midfielder Gastón Brugman.

Brugman, 29, joins the Galaxy from Italian Serie B club Parma Calcio. He spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Real Oviedo in Spain La Liga 2. He played in 34 games, with three goals and six assists.

Brugman, who is from Uruguay, is signed through 2025, with an option for 2026.

Galaxy coach Greg Vanney confirmed Saturday that the club were in discussions with Brugman.

“We spent time working on this player as a player we tried to get in a year ago,” Vanney said. “There were certain dynamics it didn’t work. So we’ve spent a lot of time watching how he plays, we’ve spent a lot of time in communication. This is not something that happened overnight.

“He’s keenly aware of the league. He has friends who play in the league. So he’s been able to track us and our style of play really suits him.”

Vanney described him as “versatile” and a “play-making defensive midfielder.”

“He helps brings some balance and some experience,” Vanney said.

Brugman will allow for current midfielder Rayan Raveloson and Mark Delgado to move up the field a bit more.

The Galaxy sent $200,000 in General Allocation Money to Charlotte FC to acquire the international roster slot for Brugman.

The transfer window closes Aug. 4. Vanney said the Galaxy were trying to bring in two players
