LDS Church begins construction on new temple in Yorba Linda, only the 9th in California

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrated a new beginning this weekend in Yorba Linda.

The church broke ground Saturday on a new temple, which will be its ninth in California and the second in Orange County.

The temple will serve the LDS community within an 18-square-mile radius, providing a space for the church’s “most sacred worshipping, ceremonies and sacraments,” said Art Francis, communication director for the church’s local Anaheim coordinating council.

It is replacing the church’s smaller building on Bastanchury Road; city planners approved the project in May.

The temple’s design was modified from its original proposal after feedback from the city and community, Francis said.

The temple’s proposed steeple was lowered 99 feet to 70 feet, matching the height of the other two steeples on churches in the city, and it was moved to the front of the building, he said.

He said the temple also includes a portico, matching typical Southern California architecture for a “Spanish mission look.”

The temple’s entrance was moved off of Osmond Street and onto Bastanchury Road to address concerns raised at community meetings, Francis added.

“We did that as a courtesy for the neighbors,” he said. “We feel, under the admonition of our savior, that we’re supposed to love our neighbors. It was important to us that they felt they had an input in it.”
