SEATTLE — Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, whose right wrist issue had initially been so mild as to keep him out for only 12 games, will now undergo surgery that will cost him the rest of the season.
The Angels reported on Friday that Rendon would have surgery “to repair his right wrist.”
It will be the second time in Rendon’s three seasons with the Angels that he’ll have season-ending surgery. Last August, Rendon underwent hip surgery, which he said corrected a problem that had led to two of his three previous trips to the injured list.
This season, Rendon first suffered a wrist injury on May 26. He missed just about two weeks, coming back earlier than expected after a specialist examined him and gave the go-ahead to accelerate his rehab, head athletic trainer Mike Frostad said on Wednesday.
Rendon played four games and aggravated the injury on Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, Rendon remained on the active roster. Interim manager Phil Nevin said on both days that they would re-evaluate him at game time to determine if he could pinch hit.
Rendon is in the third year of a seven-year, $245 million contract. In the shortened 2020 season he had a .915 OPS, which was good enough for a 10th-place finish in American League MVP balloting.
Rendon, 32, has now hit .235 with a .710 OPS in 103 games over the past two seasons.
