Aaron Donald, Rams agree on new contract, big raise

The Rams and Aaron Donald have agreed to terms on a new contract that reportedly will make the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.

The team confirmed Monday that a new deal has been reached, but did not confirm the dollar figures.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported the Rams and the 31-year-old defensive tackle reworked the three remaining years on his contract to pay him more than $30 million per year, up from the $22.5 million per year he was making under his existing six-year, $135 million contract.

Donald’s contract still runs through the 2024 season.

This means he goes back to being a headache for opponents after presenting a worry for the Rams and their fans since their Super Bowl victory in February.

Donald, whose seven first-team All-Pro selections are a Rams record, had openly considered retirement while negotiating for a raise.

His previous contract’s total value and yearly average ranked first among defensive tackles, but the total placed him second among defensive players (behind Khalil Mack’s $141 million over six years with the Chargers), and the average placed him sixth.

Donald was at the Rams’ facility in Thousand Oaks on Monday and will participate in spring workouts for the first time in 2022 when the team holds minicamp on Tuesday and Wednesday. He is expected to be available to reporters this week.

More to come on this story.
