LA Fleet Week: San Pedro City Ballet performs on USS Iowa battleship

Ballerinas performed pirouettes to patriotic ballads on a battleship.

That’s not a scene that takes place every day — except at LA Fleet Week.

The San Pedro City Ballet stopped by the annual celebration of America’s maritime military branches on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, to, as the LA Fleet Week website said, “add a little elegance” to the affair.

Fleet Week returned to San Pedro this weekend after going virtual the previous two years because of the pandemic. And this year’s event marked the celebration’s first time taking place over Memorial Day weekend rather than during Labor Day; Memorial Day weekend will be Fleet Week’s timeslot moving forward.

The ballet company danced to patriotic music aboard the USS Iowa, the retired battleship that now calls San Pedro home.
