See yourself through the lens of gratitude

In the midst of whatever is happening in our lives, we all have something for which we can be grateful. Gratitude does not depend on how much we receive; gratefulness can also be felt in the act of giving.

Have you ever felt gratitude for being able to give? It evokes a special kind of joy.  Even the words “thank you” cannot reach to the depth of connection that is felt when we give from the delight of giving.

What if we were to look at ourselves with gratefulness? Maya Angelou said, “I learned a long time ago, the wisest thing I can do is be on my own side.”

After all, this body has carried us through our many years. Through the lens of gratitude for having come so far, we can be grateful not only for being here now, but for all that brought us to this moment. We can see that gratefulness is not just something we feel, it is woven into the tapestry of our lives.

As we reflect on our past, we may see that what was dreadful to go through became a catalyst to move us forward, or to change our life for the better.

I have heard it said that feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. We can let our gratitude nurture all aspects of our being. That includes taking care of our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs.

Start with thanking yourself for simple things like moments of kindness, having a full life, even keeping appointments. Giving back to the world is also part of living a balanced, meaningful life and part of nurturing your spirit.

Make it your intention to look at things, events, nature or people in a new light. If you can look at even the most basic things as a gift you give yourself, you may find that your life becomes lighter and happier.
