Huntington Beach, Orange Lutheran advance to NHSI baseball semifinals

An all-Orange County championship game for the National High School Invitational is close to happening again.

Huntington Beach and Orange Lutheran won their games Thursday and advanced to the baseball tournament’s semifinals in Cary, North Carolina.

In 2017, Dana Hills and Orange Lutheran played in the NHSI championship game. Orange Lutheran beat Dana Hills for the first of its three consecutive NHSI championships.

Huntington Beach defeated Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz) 2-1 in the quarterfinals Thursday. Trent Grindlinger’s eighth-inning base hit drove in the winning run for the Oilers.

Nicholas Dumesnil led off the inning with a single, Ralphy Velasquez singled and Brian Trujillo walked to load the bases. That set up Grindlinger’s winning drive up the middle.

Ben Jacobs pitched six innings for the Oilers (14-4), who won the NHSI in 2016.

Orange Lutheran beat Basic Academy 2-0 in another quarterfinal Thursday.

Lancers senior right-hander Louis Rodriguez pitched a complete game. Rodriguez, who signed with Texas Christian University, allowed six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Casey Borba and Carson Bowen had run-scoring hits for the Lancers (17-2).

Huntington Beach, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, plays St. John’s Country Day in one semifinal Friday. No. 1 Orange Lutheran plays Stoneman Douglas in the other semifinal Friday.

Also in the NHSI:

No. 6 Servite 8, Buford (Georgia) 1: Kai Negrete pitched a complete game and drove in two runs for the Friars (9-7) in a consolation-round game.

Roman Martin and Trevor Schmidt also had two RBIs each for Servite, which will play Hamilton on Thursday.
